May 16th was the 2nd annual Marin Sonoma Concours d'Elegance benefiting Hospice By The Bay and presented by The Price Family Dealerships. Porsche was 2010's featured marque and Porsche Club of America's Zone 7 participants filled both the corral parking and the entrants' field. 32 Porsches were judged according to PCA's "street category" in 4 different classes.
Dann Boeschen of St. Helena entered a 1966 906 which was parked next to Bruce Canepa's 1969 917K that won the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1970. Bruce Canepa also brought a 1974 911 RSR that won in its class and finished 5th overall at the 1975 Le Mans. Vijay Mallya of Sausalito entered his 1955 550 Spyder in the preservation/un-restored class, which won the Best of Show - De Sport.
A special treat for spectators and contestants alike was Janis Joplin's 1965 356C on display, famous for its psychedelic paint job. The Cabriolet usually lives in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio but made a return to Marin County for a special appearance at the Concours.
New vehicles were on display also, Mercedes-Benz displayed a privately owned SLS AMG which is described by the company as a spiritual successor to the 1954 300SL Gullwing. It is the first Mercedes automobile designed in-house by AMG. Parked near the SLS AMG was a LFA, Lexus' first exotic sports coupe. The LFA has a 552 horsepower V-10 and can top 200mph.
A slight overcast day and Frank Lloyd Wright's picturesque Marin Civic Center building as a backdrop was a photographer's dream. Car enthusiasts were treated not only to more than 200 vehicles on display but also to hundreds more in the corral and guest parking lots.
